Some background

By George Schaefer

Me and my best friend, Cookie.
Me and my best friend, Cookie.

At the suggestion of a friend I have set up this web site in an effort to furnish information regarding my health to those who might be interested. I will attempt to keep this journal (blog in the current vernacular) updated as significant news occurs.

Some background information: at my routine annual physical and with no symptoms I was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) in July 2003. Shortly thereafter Dr. Steve Rosen and his fantastic team at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago began treating me with chemotherapy for five months. I’m not sure if I felt an affinity to Steve’s thinning hair and his goatee but I couldn’t be happier with the care that he provided. In January 2004 my CLL was declared in remission. At that time I was told to have periodic blood tests and CT-scans to monitor my condition.

In September 2005 my routine tests indicated that my CLL had returned along with a disease called Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS). For the past several months I have received various chemotherapies and treatments to address both the CLL and MDS. The CLL now seems to be under control but the MDS has been more or less unresponsive. Left untreated, the MDS will likely lead to Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) — not good.

The most effective treatment for my MDS has been determined to be either a bone marrow transplant (per Loyola University Medical Center) or stem cell transplant (per NMH, University of Chicago and most others). After doing our research, getting multiple medical (and a few non-medical) opinions and dealing with a not fully accommodating insurance company (do NOT bring up the subject to Cookie!), we have decided that stem cell transplant is the way to go and Northwestern Memorial Hospital is the place to have it.

My transplant will by performed by Dr. Jayesh Mehta in early to mid-March — shortly after Anje & Nathan’s wedding on March 4. Lining up a donor and my having to take an extensive battery of physical tests beforehand would normally take four to six weeks so the timing works out well. I will probably be hospitalized for 3-4 weeks, be confined to home for 2-3 weeks and have “100 days of isolation” from transplant day to allow my immune system to redevelop (I’ve got an important fishing trip planned for late June so…). Between now and the transplant I am receiving a load of antibiotics to compensate for my weakened immune system due to depleted white blood cells. I get occasional transfusions to help get my dragging butt in gear. I’m just now learning how important red blood cells are – hello! I’m also receiving shots to stimulate white and red cell production. I have received a platelet transfusion (and may receive another if necessary) so if I cut myself shaving (yes, I do shave) it will not be fatal. Bottom-line, keep healthy between now and transplant day.

Cookie and I want to take this opportunity to THANK YOU for your terrific support. Family, friends, neighbors, business associates, casual acquaintances and total strangers — you’ve been wonderful! We couldn’t get through this without your prayers, good wishes, kind gestures and smiles. We are confident that with your support, an extremely qualified medical team, a remarkably unselfish donor and ultimately the blessing of the Lord above that I will have a long, productive and happy life ahead.

With love, hope and gratitude – George

George and Cookie-you are both warriors! We are in awe of the battle you are waging, and the courage and humor with which you are waging it. We think of you often, and have you both in our prayers. Anything we can do or help you with, we stand ready, just call. See you soon. Love from Debby & Frank

  2. Jim Barrett Says:

    George,
You (and Cookie) are in my prayers. I donate platelets if you need them. However, If you take me up on my offer, you may have a sudden urge to travel.
If there is anything I can do, let me know.
    Jim

  3. Barb (the daughter) Dhein Says:

    George,
Thanks for your periodic updates. They are greatly appreciated. You, Cookie and the kids are ever present in my thoughts and prayers. My money is on all of you and we all look forward to celebrating you at the family reunion in July.

In the meantime, I totally expect you to dance with me at Anje’s wedding followed by a round of “Feelin’ Groovy” (which I’m confident you will be sooner than later) for the benefit of all the guests who appreciate great artists!!

As always, I’m here for any and all of you and sincerely hope you will call on me at any time.

    With love from,
    Barb and Seamus

P.S. No Seamus is not my love interest, he’s the love of my life. My Chocolate Lab who thinks I’m the best – why not, I’m all he’s ever had!!

  4. Bill Friedrich Says:

    GJS
Your medical acumen continues to marvel many as you keep us up on your battle log with both CLL and MDS. You also amaze us with your indefatigable spirit and energy as you continue to enjoy life despite this overhanging illness. Your infectious smile and sense of humor are traits you’ve always had and they seem to have only grown as you weather through this.
Thanks for the update and your penchant for staying on top of the technology. If its not putting together SJA’s alumni cd and music, its George trying to find a better way to get his medical updates out in a more tech savvy fashion. Keep up the good work and remember behind every good man is a good woman, and shy, reticent, passive Cookie certainly fits that profile.
All our prayers are with you. Friedrichs

  5. Elizabeth Suffredin Says:

    Mr. Schaefer,
Thank you for the update. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
    Take care,
    Liz

  6. Jim O'Connor Says:

I’m sure all of your friends would like to say something to you, George, but aren’t certain what to say, and are hoping and assuming that this “inconvenience” will pass, so they say nothing, but they are with you. I’m also certain that everyone admires your courage and humor. And all of us Loyola guys who were so busy studying Latin that we weren’t offered biology class appreciate your simplified explanations, and the links on your blog to WebMD. (I thought a platelet was a small plate.)

  7. Peter Korst Says:

George – wanted to let you know that I am thinking about you and am adding my positive karma to the battle. And YOU ARE A BLOGGER!! Thanks for starting this so we can stay up with you on what you are doing. Lynn and I are looking forward to seeing you and celebrating with you at the wedding.

  8. Audrey Korslund Says:

    Uncle George,
A Schaefer Family wedding is hardly what I would call “taking it easy”, or “resting up” before this important proceedure, however, it is also why we are what we are….don’t let a silly transplant get in the way of a good time! Most eyes with be on beautiful Anje so a wink and smile from you is as all we need. It is a nice time in your family with new daughters and sons which I’m sure add to your strength and courage. You are very lucky to have Cookie watching your back!

  9. Betsy Puterbaugh Says:

    Uncle George,

How are donors found? Can we check to see if any of us are compatible? I love you and pray for you and Cookie every day. Thanks for the details so I know what to pray for. I had a friend go through a similar “isolation” and she said that the one thing she enjoyed were audio books. It was hard for her to read but she could listen to books on tape. Let us know what kind of books you like so we can get you some to listen to. Can you post the things you will and won’t be allowed to do or have while in isolation?
You and Cookie WILL beat this thing! See you at the wedding.

  10. Bob & Annette Michalak Says:

    George:

You, Cookie, the “kids” and your entire extended family remain in our constant prayers that you will cntinue to be blessed with all of the strength, peace and good humor needed to help carry you through in dealing with your challenges. Thanks for sharing you updates with us.

Cookie & George….feel blessed with being on Frenzel’s list. Thankyou for the encouragement you give all of us. Your kids must be so proud of you.

  22. Jack McAllister Says:

    My Dear Friend George:

I hope this note finds you in good spirits this beautiful Sunday morning. Alas, I logged onto my aol account to find your email and link to your web site. What a great idea!

Part of the fatigue of dealing with this disease (or for that matter any long term illness) is further exacerbated by having to share one’s status with the many people who love and care for you………….and others, who are part of your life or the life of your extended family and simply want to express their support in a meaningful way. Your web site is a great vehicle for people to express and share their best thoughts and wishes.

During the past month, I have shared with many of my friends the challenge you and Cookie are confronting together and the gift you have been to me the past two (2) years given my challenge with cancer. Please know, your advice, council and support during this time offered me renewed strength to take on this significant life challenge.

George, thank you for being who you are! The world is a better place because of you and all of us who call you friend. We will see you through this challenge to renewed good health!!

Attached is a copy of the First Presbyterian Church of Wilmette’s Prayer List that is published weekly. You and your family are and will be in our prayers in the weeks to come. We are with you!

Blessings on behalf of many new friends in Christ…

    Jack

  23. Mary Kay Brunner-Dasse Says:

Life brings with it challenges and goodness. In this time of your life you are experiencing extremes of both of these. May you all feel the love and prayers extended to you. God Bless
    Mary Kay

  24. John McCormick Says:

George and Cookie: Being on the Al Frenzel e-mail list, I’ve been aware of George’s medical problems and remembering you both in my prayers. While I haven’t had much opportunity to see you in recent years, I have great memories of the days at “Camelot” on Williamsburg Rd. when you were “dating.” I will be praying for the future medical treatments success. Forbes

  25. Jim Dhein Says:

    George & Family,
Very high tech of you with the BLOG!! You’re in our thoughts and prayers all the time. Stay strong and stay positive. We look forward to seeing you at the wedding in March. Betsy has some great ideas about the books on tape, let us know what you want so we can load you up. Perhaps you’d like Pete Carroll’s playbook for next year…………..
    Take Care,
    JD, AD, & jd

  26. Johnny & Craze Says:

Cuno–You make your up and coming medical procedures sound easier than docking “Why Don’t We” in a stiff current with half the boaters in the channel yelling out which way to turn the steering wheel. We wish you the best, and thanks for all the updates. Love always, Johnny and Karen

  27. Mike Wadden Says:

    Uncle George,

This is why half the North Shore still buys their booze from the little family store on Gross Point Rd. I am inspired by you and proud to be a Schaefer and your nephew. Thinking of you every day and fully expect you to be catching some big fish (by your standards) in June. I will shoot you some tunes for your iPod during your islolation period. Keep on Blogging.
    Love you,
    Mike

  28. Kelly McShane Says:

George, you are way ahead of me! You have learned how to produce your own blog, and it took me days to figure out how to enter it. The blog is a great idea. I think of you often and am so glad to be able to hear how things are going without putting you or Cookie through one more repetition of the latest developments.

Your grace under fire is a lesson to us all. When life puts big challenges in my path, I hope I will have learned enough to meet them with your spirit.

I am not sure how the medical system accounts for transfusions, but I am a very good blood donor (I even feel better afterward), so put me on the list if I can help.

I think Molly has made the offer in our name, but let me repeat it: If you get tired of your own four walls during the isolation period, come downtown and spend a couple weeks in our condo and pretend you’re on vacation. There is already a stock of Schaefer wine in place.

See you on the University Club dance floor!

    Kelly McShane

George, – sending you positive energy as you and Cookie plough through this latest health issue. Your positive attitude and your family (plus a crack medical team) will get you through this. You will be in my thoughts daily.

  32. Frank&Arlene Kronthal Says:

    George,
This is my first blog experience. It is a great idea.

At the men’s retreat last week-end in Barrington there were plenty of your well-wishers present. While names weren’t mentioned out loud, I know yours came up a lot in our prayers. I hear that a good, positive attitude makes a big difference – so keep it up.

    Jim & Pattie

  41. Jack Callahan Says:

    George:

You have it all! The family, the friends, the prayers, the medical solution and the personal grit and courage!

A beautiful wedding awaits, the elusive fish are nervous and the Fourth of July parade anticipates your unique prescence. You are perhaps the only member of the Evanston Marching Kazoo Band who has never executed a manuever in the wrong direction nor played the wrong tune!

Your friends and family will forgive you when you evolve from the “isolation period” as an authority on all those good subjects that you had time to read.
We’ll be happy to deal with that, George.

    Slainte! To your health,

    Jack and Gayle

Our boys-only lunch was a great idea. It was good to catch up with you.
I can’t get over how good you look even though you still eat like you were at Notre Dame’s south dining hall.
Kathy and I are looking forward to being in your company Saturday. We, along with your family and many friends, wish you continued acceptance and strength in dealing with your current health concerns. You stand as a fine example to all of us.

Best regards, Mark & Margaret Burka

  59. Bill Breen Says:

    Cuno
You look good with the Cubs emblem on your noggin. Good thing you’re not a Toledo Mud Hens fan. That ugly bird would take away from your hair-free good looks and scare Cookie and kids away.

    Dear George,
When you feel frustrated about having to take it easy more than you’d care to, just remember an old Italian and/or Spanish proverb:
“How good it is to do nothing and to rest afterwards!”

May you continue to move toward good health,
    Gloria and Larry

  65. George Randall Says:

    George
Was thinking of you the orther day and had a supplier down from Chicago and asked but they had no news. You are looking great in the picture for all you have gone through. I know that you are blessed and proud of what the children have accomplished. They take after their dad. My son just started at Arizona state and loving it. Sherry and I have had a great year. Decided to start taking time to enjoy my hobbies and travel. Took off 4 months this year. If you ever want to go fishing in Alaska let me know I have several good contacts. Went hunting in the artic circle for caribo and bear last year…. want an experience. The business down year is the usual. Started a new store in St.Louis and having alot of problems with the city had to finally sue them. Been traveling to Europe quite a bit and started an import company to bring back some of the wines I found. I really enjoy that aspect of the business. Not putting the long hours in any more at work but always fixing one of my antique cars in the warehouse behind the store. I do alot of tours with the cars and a few shows with my 2 show cars. Still remember the my early years at Schaefer’s with great regard. I am so very pleased to hear that you are on your way to full recovery. I was sick a few years back during Christmas with the flu and was doing the same as you….nothing. However, this was a blessng for I knew after that month long period away from the company that it still ran without me. I also bought my first antique classic a 1926 Franklin 4 door with an air cooled engine and wood frame. From there the hobby began and have had a ball with it. Went to the World Series here in St. Louis and that was special even though a few nights were a bit cold. We were invited by Sazerac to the races at Kendland Race track, lost money, meet some very nice people and had a terrific time. From there were took the motor home and a 1950 Ford convertible to Rockville, Indiana and went to the Coverred Bridge Festival. The trees were beautiful, the top down driving along these country roads and seeing the bridges was just perfect. Making time for advantures and collecting memories and remembering special people like you…. does not get any better. I would love to come and see you when I am in Chicago again. My thoughts and prayers continue and again thanks for all those years together…. they were hard, rewarding and the base to my succuess. Thank you!
